Sweetgum is a tree found in moist to wet hammocks, bluff forests, and floodplain forests. It is frequent from the northern counties south to the central peninsula and blooms from spring to summer (Wunderlin, 2003).

Sweetgum has a variety of uses, including, but not limited to lumber, chewing gum, pharmacological and culinary. It has a large range, spanning 34 states, and is found parts of Canada (Kartesz, 1999).
